THERAPY/COUNSELING
We believe in a multi-disciplinary approach. Our clinicians use effective and documented treatment approaches to help our patients. We offer individual therapy for children, adolescents and adults. Treatment planning involves a dialogue between client and psychologist who work together to discuss and address the problems or concerns at hand, and promote personal or relationship growth and development. Family involvement in the treatment of our child and adolescent patients is a critical piece to ensure success of children with academic, emotional, and behavioral difficulties.
Individual therapy services offered may cover a broad range of presenting problems including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, personality disorders, stress management, trauma and loss, relationship problems, aging, illness, sexual orientation, and struggles with life’s challenges and choices.
Range of Services include:
- Individual therapy (DBT and CBT)
- Family Therapy
- Gottman Couples Counseling
- Behavior Management
- Parenting Skills and Parent Consultations
- Play Therapy
- DBT Group Therapy
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy for both Adolescents and Adults
- Immigration Evaluations
In family therapy the set of relationships among family members is the focus of treatment. In family therapy we can help you recognize how these relationships are related to the current difficulties experienced by one or more family members and work together to improve these relationships. In family therapy, the goal is not to assign blame. Rather, the goal is to develop new ways of interacting with one another that promote healthy, loving relationships. Family therapy sessions are often combined with individual and couples therapy sessions.
Family therapy may be preferred when dealing with changes in family structure, family crisis, or reoccurring family struggles that may be triggered by:
- Divorce or remarriage
- A move or new job
- Death or loss of a loved one
- Difficulty adjusting to the birth of a sibling
- Effects of alcoholism or drug abuse
- Conflicts that families feel they can’t handle on their own
COUPLES THERAPY
Couples counseling often involves both joint and individual sessions to determine the history of the union, the nature of the couple’s problems, the relationship’s strengths and weaknesses, and to develop a working alliance that will encourage forward movement and help manage the emotions that accompany relationship turmoil.
Assessments can be conducted to address specific questions, and help guide treatment planning, and diagnosis. For example, psycho-educational testing can provide a picture of a student’s cognitive profile to facilitate school planning and diagnose the presence of a learning disability or Attention Deficit Disorder.
Adults can also benefit from psychological assessments for a range of reasons, including helping to recognize previously unidentified learning, attentional, or cognitive problems. Counseling related to the meaning and implications of findings from an assessment can help guide decision-making regarding further treatment, workplace concerns, or academic planning.
We offer several therapeutic psychological assessment services:
- Emotional/Behavioral Evaluations
- Personality Testing
- Intelligence/Gifted Testing
- Learning Disability Evaluations
- ADHD Evaluations
- Vocational/Rehabilitation Evaluations (coming soon)
Psychological counseling can help to improve communication and to develop healthy ways of dealing with conflict that will address not only current issues but will set the groundwork for dealing successfully with future issues that naturally will arise and challenge any relationship. A psychological approach values the importance of helping partners understand each other’s feelings, needs and perspectives.
When initiating couples therapy, a 90 minute initial evaluation with both partners present is recommended in order to gather essential background information regarding the history of the couple’s problem. After this initial meeting, an individual meeting is held with each partner and then followed up by weekly joint couple’s therapy sessions.
